Virtual realism

Artists…

We have been thinking about Socialist Realism: the artistic style popularized in Stalin’s Soviet Union which depicted idealized visions of regions and people under his rule. There are obvious political machinations behind this artistic period that are particular to Russia from the 1930s through 80s. However, the themes this style evokes: mandated idealism, instilling societal norms, misleading the public, and trying to control viewers through visual means, are not reserved to this one artistic period.

Virtual Realism explores the ways in which visual material can influence, silence, coax, and command. Interpretations are endless and can range from the innocuous influence of an image, to overt propaganda. Virtual Realism intentionally leaves space for an array of responses to the themes of the show, so explore at will and by all means, get weird. The show will culminate as an online exhibition via the arthistorybabes.com and as a digital catalogue PDF.
